Cardiac Services at Cardiovascular Consultants of Long Island
Cardiology is a specialty dealing with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The field includes diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology. Cardiologists investigate patients with suspected heart disease by taking a very careful, extensive history of the patient's condition, and performing a complete physical examination.
Our expertise in heart and cardiac care has been known, demonstrated and appreciated for years. Our non-invasive cardiologic services include:
- Echocardiography
- Echocardiography (EK-o-kar-de-OG-ra-fee) is a painless test that uses sound waves to create images of your heart. It provides your doctor with information about the size and shape of your heart and how well your heart’s chambers and valves are working.
The test also can identify areas of heart muscle that aren’t contracting normally due to poor blood flow or injury from previous heart attack(s). In addition, a type of echocardiography called Doppler ultrasound shows how well blood flows through the chambers and valves of your heart. Echocardiography can detect valvular abnormalities including stenoses (narrowing) or insufficiency (leaks) of the heart valves. It can also detect blood clots inside the heart, fluid buildup in the sac around the heart (pericardium), and problems with the aorta (the main artery that carries oxygen rich bloodout of the heart).
Who Needs Echocardiography?
Your doctor may recommend echocardiography if you’re suffering from signs and symptoms of heart problems. For example, symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling in the legs can be due to weakness of the heart (heart failure), which can be seen on an echocardiogram.
- Nuclear stress testing
- A nuclear stress test lets doctors see pictures of your heart while you are resting and shortly after you have exercised. The test can give information about the size of the heart's chambers, how well the heart is pumping blood, and whether the heart has any damaged or dead muscle. Nuclear stress tests can also give doctors information about your arteries and whether they might be narrowed or blocked because of coronary artery disease.
- Holter monitoring
- Holter monitoring gives doctors a constant reading of your heart rate and rhythm over a 24-hour period (or longer). The Holter monitor can record heart rate and rhythm when you feel chest pain or symptoms of an irregular heartbeat (called arrhythmia). Your doctor can then look at the time when you noticed your symptoms. Reading this printout will give your doctor an idea about the nature of your heart problem.
- AICD/PPM followup
- AICD follow up involves checking that an implanted pacemaker or AICD (artificial implanted cardiac defibrillator) is functioning properly. We utilize trans-telephonic monitoring in our ICD/Pacemaker clinic to insure adequate battery life.
Adjustments to pacemaker and defibrillator function can be done easily and non-invasively in our office.
- Carotid duplex sonograph
- Carotid duplex sonography, sometimes called carotid duplex ultrasound, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that allows a physician to see the structure of the carotid artery and the way blood is flowing through it.
- Abdominal Aortic Ultrasonography
- A noninvasive tecnique using ultrasound technology to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysms, a potentially lethal condition
- Coumadin Followup
- Many patients are on coumadin (a blood thinner) for a variety of conditions. For example, atrial fibrillation, prosthetic heart valves, or peripheral artery disease. The INR can easily be measured in our office by fingerstick and the dosage be adjusted immediately to avoid trips to a laboratory.
- Carotid Ultrasonography
- An excellent non invasive technique to screen for atherosclerosis ( fatty buildup a nd plaque) in the carotid arteries, which may be a risk for stroke and heart attack.
- Cardiac Risk Factor Analysis
- A comprehensive personalized analysis by our board certified physicians as to your cardiac risk and measures that can be done to lower your risk of heart attack and stroke.
